Marvel Studios is working on a standalone movie about its martial arts superhero Shang-Chi, Variety reports. Sources told the publication that the studio has roped in Expendables co-writer Dave Callaham to pen the screenplay. Callaham co-wrote the screenplay for DC’s Wonder Woman 1984, which was shot this year.

If the project does make it to the big screen, it will be the first time a Marvel picture has focused on an Asian character. While no director nor actors are attached to the project as yet, Deadline reports that the studio is already on the lookout for Asian or Asian-American directorial candidates. Writer Callaham is Chinese-American.

In the Marvel canon, Shang-Chi is known as the “Master of Kung Fu,” one of the comic universe’s major martial arts experts alongside Iron Fist. Unlike your typical superhero, Shang-Chi doesn’t have any super-powers, but his combat technique is unparalleled. His narratives often center on espionage, so Marvel could possibly be planning a spy movie of sorts.
