As the strong odds-on favorite, fans have been speculating that it's a case of when, rather than if, Floyd Mayweather defeats Conor McGregor on August 26. But now, it appears the boxing superstar could be prepared to level the playing field somewhat by fighting in 8 oz. gloves.
The pair had originally agreed to fight in 10 oz. gloves, as is standard for a super welterweight bout. This was seen as a disadvantage for McGregor, who is used to fighting in 4 oz. UFC mitts, with experts claiming the larger gloves would negate the power behind his famous left hook.
Posting on Instagram, Mayweather has stunned fans by claiming he is now prepared to meet the Irishman's initial demand and make it an 8 oz. contest. When Mayweather initially floated the idea during the recent media tour, McGregor replied: "Don't fool the public." UFC owner, Dana White, has also said the weight of the gloves was one of the sticking points in making a deal.
Mayweather said: “McGregor, let’s fight in 8 oz. gloves. Don’t believe what you hear in the media. Don’t believe what you hear on blog sites. If it’s not coming directly from me, then it’s not true.
“I’m telling McGregor ‘let’s fight in 8 oz gloves’. McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses. I’ll be wearing 8 oz. Grant gloves. Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I’m willing to accommodate. Let’s give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see.”
Of course, McGregor will still go into the match as the huge underdog, but there's no doubt an 8 oz. contest suits the Irishman much better than a 10 oz.
