Our in-house Meet the Muse series continues, this time highlighting Melbourne-based DJ Sally Lam.

In our new gallery, Sally rocks brands like Nike, Playboy, Acne Studios, Nasir Mazhar, Comme des Garçons BLACK, and more. We asked Lam a handful of questions in order to get to know her a little more, see what she had to say below and check out our previous instalment with Madison Borbely.

Make sure to follow along with Sally on SoundCloud.

Describe your current style.

I always start off with one piece of clothing, or sneakers, or an accessory that I feel drawn to from my wardrobe, and dress accordingly, with all other pieces based off that single item material or colour. I generally find myself style-blocking heavy black tones and using complementary colours to let the pieces speak, pairing something like a black nylon Prada handbag with a black nylon trench. It’s currently winter in Melbourne, which means it’s super cold and my Uniqlo Heattech gear gets more wear than any other item in my wardrobe.

What is the thing that gets you out of bed each morning?

Usually my boyfriend poking me and shaking me until I eventually cave in and move. I’m not much of a morning person so I am extremely fortunate to have a human alarm. His positivity and humour gets me inspired at the start of my day.

If you weren’t in your current city, where would you live?

Omotesandō in Shibuya, Japan. I’d move there just for the architecture. It’s also the prefecture where Comme des Garçons’ trading museum is located, and naturally I fell in love with the area during my first adventure there. The area is filled with some of the best retail spaces on that side of the globe, and some even better coffee shops to match.

Which Emoji best represents you?

The grey Rabbit face. Say what you want, but I’m obsessed with rabbits and the Playboy logo. I have an ongoing collection of strange bits of rabbit paraphernalia and Playboy collectables from all over the place.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“…Sally, don’t let any cunt tell you any different. At the end of the day you are your own person!”
Please note, this quote was spoken to me on Australian soil and the term cunt has a widely misunderstood connotation here. In a nutshell, what this utterly nutty yet undoubtedly wise ‘Strayan man was trying to tell me was, believe what you believe and trust your gut, you will figure out the rest. Fuck every cunt.
 Never fuckin’ around.

What’s your motto?

All in or nothing, or something like that. This is 2016, does anyone other than the club scouts and Drake still have mottos?

Describe your perfect day.

Perfect? Good joke! My expectations for perfection are never met, but I see my perfect day as a “permanent vacation” type of arrangement. Waking up every day and doing whatever I want, and contributing something positive to the universe. Air, water, good food, good people and happiness. It’s about the most you can ask for.

How do you relax?

I light up some vanilla and caramel candles with a mix of Nujabes, early Lapalux and Shlomo’s Bad Vibes playing in the background, then kick off my Playboy nighty and slip into a bubble bath.

If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one ability, what would it be?

Teleportation, no doubt! You should see my Uber receipts. Like seriously, hundreds if not thousands of e-mails!

What is your most treasured item of clothing?

The Comme des Garçons Automne-Hiver Satin Bomber Robe from 2015. It’s very similar to what the runway staff would wear as a backstage uniform during the mid ’80s, so it holds a lot of personal value to me.

What is your most treasured possession?

My film photos, and probably all the music on my hard drive. I tried to explain to my boyfriend, and this is the best I got, “It’s like when you die in a video game, but you go back to that last saved file, you can always stumble back on happy memories and hardships.

What is your fondest memory?

Fan-girling when I met Hiroshi Fujiwara in his Park-ing Store in Tokyo a couple months ago.

What could you eat every day and not get tired of?

Ice cream. It’s god’s creamy gift to humanity, what more do I have to say?
