While numbers had already been steadily declining in recent years, the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards experienced the lowest ratings in its history. Reports show that 5.68 million viewers tuned in to the awards show across 10 different platforms.
This year's numbers are ultimately down from the 6.5 million who watched in 2016 and the 9.8 million in 2015. When the event was solely shown on MTV back in 2002, it garnered 11.9 million viewers.
While awards shows in general have experienced a slump in viewership this year, the VMAs were also going up against the much-hyped season finale of Game of Thrones on Sunday. Regardless, we'd be foolish to believe the MTV awards show is as relevant or in-demand as it used to be.
