In 1999 Jim Carrey was given the chance to portray his idol, the infamous comedian Andy Kaufman, in the film Man on the Moon. A new Netflix documentary, Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond, delves deeper into what went on behind the scenes and how Carrey dealt with portraying Kaufman.

During filming, rumors circulated that Carrey had gone overboard with his method acting, much like Kaufman, who was known to push the boundaries of comedy and stay in character even when off-stage.

Carrey’s attempt to emulate his idol threatened to derail filming and reportedly made his co-stars very uncomfortable, with hours of behind-the-scenes footage being withheld. The documentary explores the artistic process method actors go through and also touches on how Carrey’s outlook as an actor has changed.

The documentary is available on Netflix from November 17.
