First We Feast, the same outlet that is responsible for Hot Ones, has just premiered their first-ever mini-documentary. Dubbed Hometown Hero: The Legend of New York's Chopped Cheese, the project is an in-depth look at one of New York's most iconic sandwiches.

Upon beginning their investigation earlier this year, First We Feast was continually told that to understand the real New York, you must understand the chopped cheese. Chopped cheese in turn refers to the bodega specialty that gets its name from the "chopping" of hamburger patties, which occurs on the griddles in delis throughout the boroughs. The minced meat is then covered in cheese, placed onto a roll or hero, and dressed with various condiments.

The origin of the chopped cheese, however, is slightly more obscure. When attempting to find out where it came from, how it became such a popular food item, and why it is difficult to find today, the publication was detailed with a deeper story centering around borough rivalries, hip-hop mythology and unforeseen truths, thus presenting a more meaningful glimpse into what makes the city tick.

Without giving away too much, you'll want to press play above to learn more surrounding the ins and outs of New York through the iconic chopped cheese sandwich.
