Editor’s Notes: WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes was the first woman to get a signature Nike basketball shoe, and in 1995, the Nike Air Swoopes was born. Additionally, it’s worth noting that she was the second athlete behind Michael Jordan to have an eponymous model.
With ’90s pop and basketball culture making a comeback this year, Nike pays homage to the era with a new series of retro female footwear, and the Nike Air Swoopes II, which debuted in 1997, will be the first silhouette re-released. The drop hopes to inspire new generations of women that can connect to the sport through Sheryl Swoopes’ iconic story.
In regard to what the Air Swoopes meant, “It feels surreal to know that I had my own shoe,” says Swoopes. “I look at where the game is today, and how far we as female athletes, as women, have come — and how much work we still have to do just to be appreciated. I feel like now is such an important time for women and female athletes everywhere.”
