Having already explored the tumultuous trial of disgraced former NFL player and alleged murder, OJ Simpson, TV show creator Ryan Murphy is furthering his exploration of real world events by focusing his American Crime Story lens on the murder of Gianni Versace.

While the roles of Gianni Versace and serial kiler, Andrew Cunanan, have gone to Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss, today comes the announcement that Oscar-winning actress, Penelope Cruz, will portray Donatella Versace - marking her U.S. television debut.

What's particularly interesting is that this storyline and casting announcement reflects what will occur during season 3 of American Crime Story.

Season 2 will instead focus on on the events of Hurricane Katrina.

However, both iterations will debut sometime in 2018 and promises to again have the series contend for a staggering 22 Emmys like that of season 1.
