This year has seen an abundance of riches in musical releases. From career-defining works like Beyoncé's Lemonade to the haunting final work of David Bowie, it has been tough to sift through all the greats. But the year in hip-hop has been particularly bountiful, with some of the biggest names in the game (and some names long-thought dead making a grand return) churning out exceptionally good work.

Pitchfork, the always-trusty music site, has yet to share their picks for album of the year, but they have shared an unranked list of their favorite rap albums that we were blessed with in 2016. It has your usual suspects (Kanye, Kendrick) but the full tally is a diverse group of artists, some of whom made their major label debut this year.
