UPDATE: Yesterday, March 9, a person who did not want to be publicly identified paid the $161,633 that R. Kelly owed in back child support, according to Chicago Associated Press. The chief policy officer for the Cook County sheriff’s office told Chicago AP that “a person who wished to remain anonymous handed a check on Saturday morning to the county clerk’s office for the full amount of Kelly’s back child support.” The bond slip was apparently left blank. Kelly was freed yesterday, three days after a judge ordered him to pay the total amount of back child support that he owed.
Following his recent release from jail for multiple sexual abuse allegations, R. Kelly has been taken into custody during a hearing for unpaid child support according to Associated Press. The Cook County Sheriff's Office confirmed that R. Kelly will remain in jail until the $161,000 that he owes is paid.
Failure to pay child support in any amount over $20,000 is a felony under Illinois law. R. Kelly's publicist, Darryll Johnson, officially confirmed the details of the arrest in front of press this evening. This event comes hours after R. Kelly's interview with Gayle King aired on CBS. During the intense discussion, Kelly ranted, sobbed, and vehemently denied the 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse filed against him. His next court date is scheduled for March 13.
