Filmmaker Ridley Scott is working on a sequel to his 2000 Oscar-scooping smash Gladiator, Deadline reports.

Teaming with scriptwriter Peter Craig, who penned The TownThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 and 2, and upcoming Top Gun sequel Maverick, Scott will direct a narrative that picks up sometime after — spoiler alert — Russell Crowe's character Maximus Decimus Meridius meets his end in Rome's Colosseum during the finale of the first film.

Gladiator 2 will follow Lucius, son of Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen in the original) and nephew of bad guy Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). According to Deadline, Commodus' villainous acts in Gladiator — he murdered his father to seize the throne and pre-wounded Maximus ahead of their climactic duel — are said to have left a strong impression on Lucius.

The original gathered 12 Academy Award nominations and five wins, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe, so a sequel will have a lot to live up to. After all, what we do in life echoes in eternity. Remind yourself of the OG via the trailer below.
