While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story didn't take home the top prize for visual effects at last night's Academy Awards, the sprawling space odyssey was still a masterclass in using technology to aid with the storytelling.
The BBC recently unveiled an in-depth look at how director, Gareth Edwards, and graphics supervisor, Steve Ellis, crafted many of the most noteworthy space sequences - like the assault on Scarif - and how Edwards employed a unique technique of experiencing a shot by creating a real-time virtual reality system which involved hooking an iPad to an HTC Vive virtual reality controller.
“He would walk around and decide where he wanted the shots to start and end,” Ellis said. “This was how Gareth was filming, moving around and finding interesting framing.”
