Selena Gomez previously revealed her Lupus diagnosis in 2015, and last year she took some time off after reports of struggling with the disease as well as anxiety and depression.

While it seemed that the singer was back in good health, Gomez revealed today that she received a kidney transplant from her BFF and fellow actress, Francia Raisa, best known for her role as Adrian Lee on the TV series The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

Published on her official Instagram account, the two are seen holding hands across their hospital beds.

“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of,” Gomez wrote in the caption. “So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering.”

Gomez expressed that she’s looking forward to sharing more with her fans about her transplant journey, but in the meantime she wanted to thank Raisa and her health team.

“She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me,” Gomez said. “I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
