On the set of Francis Ford Coppola's forthcoming sci-fi epic Megalopolis, amidst rumored reports of chaos and clashes, troubled actor Shia LaBeouf gets into character. The actor was previously spotted with heavy eyeliner but LaBeouf is now leaning hard into his character with a borderline drag costume.
Spotted on January 19 by paparazzi, LaBeouf wore a gilded hairpiece, corset, handbag and jewelry with a flowing, high-cut dress and tall heels. The effect, combined with the makeup, is transformative: LaBeouf is barely recognizable at all.
It's not clear what exactly LaBeouf's performance is about as only scant details about Coppola's Megalopolis have been revealed, but given that he's surrounded by over 20 other dolled-up women — including a glam Chloe Fineman — one can only presume that wherever LaBeouf's character goes, a party follows.
The same can't be said for Shia LaBeouf in reality, however.
In a late August 2022 REAL ONES podcast episode, LaBeouf essentially admitted to former partner FKA twigs' allegations that LaBeouf physically and mentally abused her.
The normally egotistical LaBeouf essentially upheld everything FKA twigs put forth, confessing that he "hurt that woman. And in the process of doing that, I hurt many other people, and many other people before that woman."
LaBeouf contended that he needed to make amends with not just twigs, whom he didn't name in the interview, before he's to work on another film. However, he's been involved with Megalopolis for months already and was working on the controversy-plagued Don't Worry Darling prior to that. It's distressing that, despite his despicable actions, LaBeouf continues to get work.
Megalopolis, which stars Aubrey Plaza, Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, and others alongside LaBeouf, has been weathering its own dramas in the meantime.
Industry reports have suggested that Coppola has proved himself incapable of managing Megalopolis. With a $100m budget mostly funded by Coppola himself, Megalopolis has cycled through visual effects teams, art departments, and other crewmembers.
“It’s unclear whether the production can go forward as planned,” one anonymous production source said, deeming the film's position as "perilous" and "chaotic."
Coppola, for his part, has disputed the charges.
”I love my cast, I love what I’m getting each day,” Coppola said in response. ”I am on schedule and on budget, and that’s what is important to me.”
