What if Snoop Dogg never linked up with Dr. Dre? Snoop almost didn’t return Dre’s first call back in 1992, according to an interview in the upcoming HBO documentary The Defiant Ones – a four part series looking at the longtime partnership between Apple Music’s Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre.

The N.W.A. member first heard a Snoop Doggy Dogg mixtape at a bachelor party, and told his cousin Warren G that he needed to take Snoop under their wing – This is a fucking diamond in the rough,” said Dre, “and we need to polish it up!”

When Dr. Dre called Snoop, the then Long Beach drug dealer didn’t believe it was really him and dismissed it as a prank call. “This ain’t no motherfuckin’ Dr. Dre,” he said, hanging up the phone. A follow-up voicemail from Dr. Dre finally convinced Snoop Dogg it was really him, and the rest is history. The two worked together on the theme song of the 1992 film Deep Cover and Dr. Dre’s debut solo album The Chronic that year, and have been frequent collaborators ever since.
