The way we listen to music and the process of discovering music has gone through a lot of change in the last half-century. Hearing the latest release from your favorite artist once meant tuning into the radio at the right time or waiting at your local record store; today, you’re notified the moment a track is released and almost every song you could hope to listen to is available in your pocket. With its eyes and ears on the past, present, and future of sound, SONOS is taking all the most beloved elements from the last 50 years of listening experiences and bringing them together into its concept stores.
According to SONOS research, most people discover its sound systems at a friend’s place. So its stores in New York, London, and now Berlin recreate home environments and show people as accurately as possible how its products might sound in their own home. The latest store, which opens this week in Berlin’s Mitte district, features two aptly titled SONOS Houses each decorated by local designers. The brand commissioned the help of Berlin-based artist Lena Petersen and design studio 44flavours to bring the SONOS Houses to life and add a visual element to the overall listening experience.
The spaces are decked out with various SONOS sound systems and visitors are invited inside to test them out with any music of their choosing using SONOS’s app. The SONOS Controller app for iOS, Android, and desktop consolidates all of your listening services—including popular streaming services, on-demand services, internet radio, podcasts players, and audiobooks—and allows users to control multiple SONOS products in one place.
Outside of the SONOS Houses, there’s an open lounge space decked out with locally designed furniture and another sound system, this one hooked up to a vinyl player. Like the stores in London and New York, the Berlin store will regularly play host to public and private events, inviting guests to listening sessions with music artists, DJs, radio presenters, and podcast hosts.
The store opens Thursday, March 12, 2018, at Oranienburger Straße 83. Check it out in the gallery above but be sure to hit up the store in person for the full experience.
