Los Angeles-based artist Sterling Ruby recently debuted his ready-to-wear mens and womenswear collection at Pitti Immagine Uomo no. 96. Titled S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA., the unisex collection is inspired by Ruby’s artworks over the past decade, including soft sculpture, quilts, backdrops, and garments, and is now available to shop at contemporary fashion destination SSENSE.
Though he’s never fully forayed into fashion as a designer himself, Ruby’s influence on the industry has been impactful for many years now, largely through his work with Raf Simons. He is best known for powerful installation pieces which have integrated textile and quilted fabrics.
“I’ve always been interested in the behavioral power that comes with clothing,” Ruby says of the new line. “For years I have been privately exploring garments as a medium, as something that impacts the way one can think, feel, and move. I couldn’t be more excited to finally put my clothing out into the world.”
His debut collection has roots in the West Coast’s denim industry, boasting utilitarian pieces that have been dyed, bleached, washed, and rinsed in a unique process. Notably from the line, jackets, jeans, and lounge pants come in specialized fabrics which are activated by the elements, and graphic tees with one-of-one collages.
