Editor’s Notes: London-based label STORY mfg has come through with its “Earthtone” collection for FW19. While many labels are quick to describe their collections and processes as “sustainable,” it’s a designation that STORY mfg takes very seriously.

The brand’s latest collection is made of organic fibers and dyed with leaves, bark, roots, heartwood, and fruit. This might seem like a gimmick, but it was a decision borne from a genuine concern about the chemicals we are exposed to through the clothes we wear. The brand’s designers believe that, “If the chemicals in clothing were packaged into a cream you’d never let it anywhere near your skin.”

We often think of sustainability in zero-sum terms. The “Earthtone” collection however demonstrates how niche artisanal practices can be preserved and revived through creative collaborations. Take, for example, the “Is Lunar” piece scarf for £220 (approximately $267), which is hand-crocheted from organic cotton yarn and dyed with natural indigo, madder root, babul bark, iron, and myrobalan.

The collection also includes hand-embroidered caps made from organic cotton corduroy and hand-dyed with babul bark. The tie-dyed and screen printed “Grateful Mother Earth Bark Ripple” long-sleeve tee is another standout, hammering home its sustainability message with “No. 1 Best Planet” slogans and planet earth graphic embellishments.
