Japanese automotive company Subaru introduces two new performance models to its inventory with the 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA and 2018 Subaru BRZ tS.
The WRX STI Type RA which stands for "record attempt" and the first RA was named for a Subaru Legacy that broke the FIA World Speed Endurance Record by clocking over 62,000 miles in 18 days, setting a top speed of 138 mph in 1989. This new model is named for the upcoming WRX STI Type RA NBR Special race car that will attempt a Nürburgring record sometime this summer.
This 2018 WRX STI Type RA is lighter and more robust with a few new upgrades. A carbon fiber roof, carbon fiber rear spoiler, and lightweight BBS 19-inch forged alloy wheels with 245/35R19 Yokohama Advan Sports tires come standard, while the spare tire has also been removed. In addition, the engine boasts a mild power bump through a 2.5-liter turbocharged BOXER engine with the help of a new cold air intake and new exhaust, a retuned ECU, stronger pistons, a revised third-gear ratio and short shifter. The weight reduction, additional horsepower and revised gearing all contribute to faster acceleration.
For its exterior, the vehicle is adorned with Cherry Blossom Red accents around both the front mesh grille and new rear bumper cover. A myriad of STI badges are also implemented on the wing, mirrors, and bumpers, while the rear deck lid displays the WRX STI Type RA badge. Additionally, the interior features new Recaro seats, a steering wheel wrapped in Ultrasuede for better grip and an individually numbered plaque mounted on the center console to showcase how limited it is.
Similar to the 2018 BRZ tS (tuned by STI), it delivers the highest level of “fun to drive” through greater flexibility, better control and stability.
Design-wise, the vehicle hosts the same visual upgrades like the WRX STI Type RA. Exclusive Cherry Blossom Red accents are implemented on the front grille and unique rear bumper cover. The rear hatch displays the official BRZ tS badge. The exterior foldable mirrors, roof-mounted shark fin antenna, BRZ and SUBARU badging all have a black finish. Also, the fog lights have been removed and replaced with STI fog light covers.
Renowned for its ultra-low center of gravity and precision handling, the BRZ tS gets front and rear SACHS dampers, coil springs, and flexible V-braces in the engine compartment. For the first time, the BRZ will come with 18-inch wheels with a set of sticky 215/40 R 18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, in addition to Brembo brakes at all four corners.
For its interior, the BRS tS also gets new Recaro seats and red contrasting stitching throughout the cabin, while the center console has been updated to a cast black finish.
Final specs and pricing will be announced later this year as each vehicle is limited to 500 units only in color options of WR Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Silica and Crystal White Pearl.
Learn more about both cars here and availability at Subaru retailers is expected for early 2018.
