Supa Bwe / Cole Schwartz

The musical renaissance coming out of Chicago is showing no signs of slowing down, and we’re all better off for it. Among the city’s roster of upcoming talent, Supa Bwe is leading the pack. Fresh from dropping a new EP (his first since his 2017 debut album), the artist has now dropped a visual for the track “I Hate You.” Directed by Lonewolf, the eerie visual finds the rapper reflecting in the woods alongside some jarring footage of praying mantises. Take a look below.

Speaking on the visual, Supa Bwe told Highsnobiety in an email that “‘I Hate You’ is about the struggles of love and the duality that lies within loving someone you shouldn’t. I made the beat to ‘I Hate You’ in 2015 but wasn’t able to fully articulate the song until this past year. This song is very personal to me. The video represents a man who has everything, but nothing at the same time. The praying mantis scene where the female eats the male represents the song and the nature of the relationship I’m speaking on.”

“I Hate You” is the opening track to Supa Bwe’s new EP Just Say Thank You, released last week. Notably, the song “Rememory” features Supa Bwe’s fellow Chicagoan Chance the Rapper. Take a listen to the project in full below.
