Editor’s Notes: Supreme’s UNDERCOVER x Public Enemy SS18 collaboration is dropping today. A portion of the proceeds from the collab will be donated to the ACLU.

This isn’t the first time Supreme has teamed up with cult Japanese brand UNDERCOVER — most recently, the two labels hooked up for collabs for FW16 and SS15 (with a tee from the later recently surfacing on Grailed for an insane $999 listing price).

The SS18 collaboration pays homage to iconic rap group Public Enemy, particularly referencing the group’s 1990 album, Fear of a Black Planet. Speaking in the Supreme teaser video for the collection, Public Enemy’s Chuck D explains that the album is “laughing at the fallacy of race. Racism is an endorsed game so people can benefit at the expense of others based on their appearance and the fear is not accepting the truth about it.”

Fans of Public Enemy took to Twitter to express reservations about people wearing the tees who might not be actual fans of the group.

However, on Reddit, many Supreme fans took the opposite approach, announcing that they wouldn’t be comfortable wearing the drop if they didn’t know Public Enemy’s music.
Others even asked if it would be considered cultural appropriation to wear the collection if they were white.
