In case you hadn’t heard, Taylor Swift‘s highly, highly-anticipated new album Reputation arrived today. Well, arrived for those that were willing to buy it – no word yet on when the pop star’s sixth full-length will appear on streaming services. And as you also are probably aware, Taylor is taking no prisoners on this album; it is a record chock full of drama that is laid bare for all to see, providing tabloid fodder for weeks to come.
Chief amongst those Taylor lashes out at on Reputation is – surprise – Kanye West. This is not new information for anyone who heard lead single “Look What You Made Me Do,” which contains the lyric “I don’t like your tilted stage,” a barely-concealed jab at Ye’s stage design for last year’s ‘Saint Pablo’ Tour.
But fans and music journalists who have been able to access the record in full today were greeted to an even less subtle comment towards both Kanye and wife Kim Kardashian on the track “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.” And by comment we mean ‘extremely pointed piece of shade thrown directly into the laps of Mr. West and Mrs. Kardashian-West, some of which even makes reference to a song on Mr. West’s album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.’ See Taylor’s damning lyrics below and judge for yourself:
“It was so nice being friends again
There I was, giving you a second chance
But then you stabbed in the back while shaking my hand
And therein lies the issue
Friends don’t try to trick you
Get you on the phone and mind-twist you
And so I took an axe to a mended fence”
“But I’m not the only friend you’ve lost lately
If only you weren’t so shady”
“Here’s a toast to my real friends
They don’t care about that he-said-she-said
And here’s to my baby
He ain’t reading what they call me lately
And here’s to my momma
Had to listen to all this drama
And here’s to you
‘Cause forgiveness is a nice thing to do
Haha, I can’t even say it with a straight face”
