When it was announced that Baz Luhrmann was lending his showmanship and penchant for grandiose musical numbers to an origin story of how hip-hop started in the Bronx, many were weary if such a match would seem forced and unnatural.
Thankfully, The Get Down proved to be winning combination of the auteurs sensibilities with hip-hop truths.
Today we get our first look at what Part 2 has in store for characters like Books, Marlene, Shaolin Fantastic, Papa Fuerte and others.
According to the official press release from Netflix, the show is set in 1978 - a year after the events of the debut season - “Amidst the backdrop of a bankrupt New York City, ruthless gangsters and money-hungry record label bosses."
The Get Down Part 2 debuts April 7 on Netflix.
