If a devastating reality check is what you’re looking for in a movie, then The Hate U Give looks set to deliver just that. Based on Angie Thomas’ 2017 bestseller, the movie dives into the important and ongoing issue of police brutality against African-Americans in the United States. Mirroring real-life events of recent times, the movie revolves around the shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer. You can see the trailer above.

The story follows high school student Starr Carter, a girl from a predominately black neighborhood called Garden Heights who attends school in an affluent white neighborhood. These opposites in her day-to-day prepare Starr for the fight ahead when her childhood friend Khalil is shot and killed by a cop after they get pulled over after a party.

The Hate U Give — a backronym taken from Tupac Shakur’s “THUG LIFE” concept (“The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody”) — stars Amandla Stenberg, best known as Rue from The Hunger Games, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Common, and Anthony Mackie. The movie is slated for an October 19 release.
