The Weeknd has officially invested in OverActive Media (OAM) as an owner. The eSports organization is the parent company of the Overwatch League’s Toronto Defiant and Splyce. The Weeknd will serve as the first global ambassador for the brand.

“As a big esports fan, I am really excited to be involved in this project,” he said. “I am looking forward to collaborating with OverActive Media in unique and innovative ways.”

OverActive Media mentioned that Toronto Defiant fans will see joint efforts between The Weeknd and the Overwatch League throughout 2019.

OAM also owns teams in the League of Legends European Championship, Overwatch League, Call of Duty World League, Rocket League, Starcraft and Smite. It is one of five organizations in the world with permanent slots in both League of Legends and the Overwatch League. The Weeknd expressed his excitement about the partnership in an accompanying press release.

This announcement follows Drake’s partnership with Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag’s eSports group 100 Thieves along with Michael Jordan recently investing in international eSports ownership group aXiomatic Gaming last fall.
