The dream festival experience promised to the 'privileged' attendees of Fyre Festival has now turned into something straight out of Lord of the Flies. Fyre Festival is (was?) on paper, an eye-wateringly expensive festival. How expensive? Tickets for the event ranged from $4,000 to a VIP package costing $250,000 split between 12 people.
Coordinated by Ja Rule and entrepreneur Billy McFarland, the festival promised headline shows from acts such as G.O.O.D. Music, Major Lazer and Disclosure and promised "a transformative two-weekend event" and "an experience that exceeds all expectations." It was supposed to be the premium festival destination for all the rich kids of Instagram and privileged elite, who duly bought tickets and packed their bags expecting beautiful weather, luxury and music. The below video depicted this idyllic scenario, with Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski orchestrating an Instagram video custom built for flower-filtered Snapchat users and rich, internet-influences. Just look at how good it looks below, guys!
Well, Fyre certainly weren't wrong about the "transformative" part. What guests were actually greeted with was utter chaos and a slew of disaster relief tents, muggers, gunshots, thieves, unhelpful staff, headliner cancellations and gourmet cuisine... cunningly disguised as cheese sandwiches. The swiftly unraveling travesty was documented by Twitter users in attendance at the festival, who unveiled what was actually going down, as you can see below.
While the event continues to be traumatic to the many rich, beautiful people currently seeking shelter in an airport and eager to fly home, social media has been ruthless as ever, with plenty of Dave Chapelle, Joanne the Scammer and Lord of the Flies references all doing the rounds.
