Hackers reportedly stole the personal information of around 57 million customers and drivers from Uber in October 2016, a breach the company then covered up for over a year, according to multiple news outlets.

Bloomberg reported that Uber’s chief security officer and one of his deputies were fired for their role in the cover up, which involved paying the hackers $100,000 to delete the stolen data and keep quiet about the hack.

Uber revealed to Bloomberg that the stolen data included the names, email addresses and phone numbers of 50 million customers, as well as personal information of about 7 million drivers, including 600,000 U.S. drivers' license numbers. Uber asserts that no Social Security numbers, credit card information, trip location details or other information were taken.

“None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it,” Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg. “We are changing the way we do business.”
