Versace senior director of sneakers and men’s footwear Salehe Bembury shared a closer look at a new Squalo Hiker colorway via Instagram yesterday. The sneaker is a slightly altered version of Versace’s FW19 Squalo sneaker. As the name suggests, it takes on a more rugged, hiking-inspired aesthetic than the original Squalo.
The maximalist sole unit stays largely the same, with the Versace Medusa peeping through the outsole under the heel. The lacing system and pull tabs on the tongue and heel are where the hiking aesthetic shines through. The laces run across and through loops on the tongue for tighter lockdown, while elsewhere a TPU wire runs around the heel and the toe box features suede and synthetic overlays.
The Squalo Hiker was unveiled at the fashion house’s SS20 show at Milan Fashion Week Men’s in June. Bembury had previously teased a white/gum colorway of the shoe (see below).
The colorway Bembury shared yesterday, however, features the most vivid color-blocking seen on a Squalo model so far, mixing green, volt, and blue on the upper and opting for a tonal gray midsole.
