The World Health Organisation (aka WHO) has officially declared video game addiction a mental health disorder.
In its revised International Classification of Diseases list for 2018, the organization added a section on gaming disorder, which according to the group is “characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior.”
According to the report, regular gaming turns into a mental health threat when “increasing priority [is] given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities” and when users can’t seem to give up gaming, even when it’s negatively affecting their life.
“The behavior pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning,” the report reads.
Basically, the occasional gaming session is fine, but when your all-night marathons turn into something you can’t live without, it could be a sign of a larger problem.
