Less than six months ago, Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi unveiled the Mi Mix 2. While the phone boasted many great qualities, its successor the Mi Mix 2S promises to offer even more. Boasting a new processor, upgraded camera functions, wireless charging, and impressive battery life stats, the new model could even give Apple’s iPhone X a run for its money.

Basic features for the Mi Mix 2S include a 5.99 inch LCD panel in full high-definition, an aluminum frame and ceramic back, dual camera system, and a new internal processor. The phone runs on Xiaomi’s MUI software, which is currently on version 9.

Dual Function Camera

The new upgrade features a dual function camera system, replacing the single nodule camera system found on the Mi Mix 2. Collectively, the camera system is comprised of two 12 megapixel sensors: one with a wide-angle lens and the other behind a telephoto lens.

On the reverse, the nodule for the camera has been moved to the top left corner, much like the iPhone X. On the front, the camera is tucked in the right-hand corner of the phone’s display.

In addition to the hardware, Xiaomi’s new camera features AI components to its software, which is likely to improve features shot in portrait mode as well as shooting in low lighting.

New Internal Processor

Internally, the phone features a boost to its internal processor using AI. The Mi Mix 2S has Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 845 processor, paired with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. The 3,400mAh battery cell remains the same, but the 2S will be available with either 64, 128, or 256GB of storage. It’s likely that the processor will provide greater performance while maintaining the battery life.

Wireless charging

Speaking of batteries, the phone can also be charged via a wireless coil embedded beneath its ceramic back. This makes the device the first Xiaomi phone to support wireless charging. For those that still wish to charge by a cord, the phone features a USB-C port at the bottom. Like the X, the Mi Mix 2S doesn’t feature a headphone jack.

Final Points

Speaking at a conference in Shanghai, Xiaomi’s co-founder Lei Jun noted: “We are comparing to iPhone X because people say it is the best phone. We just want to show we surpassed the best in many features.”

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is slated to roll out in China next week before being made available to a wider, global market. Customers can choose between a black or white design, with pricing said to start around $527 – which is nearly half of Apple’s retail price for the iPhone X.
