Back in January, Young Thug released the official music video for his song “Wyclef Jean.” The video went viral, racking up over 28 million views, even after director Ryan Staake produced the project without the rapper.

The meta music video explains how the whole thing fell apart, interspersed with audio clips of Young Thug explaining his directorial vision. Despite Young Thug’s absence, the video managed to win an MTV VMA for Best Editing on Sunday night.

However, no one informed Young Thug of his first VMA win, and the rapper didn’t get the news until Monday, as he Tweeted out to his fans.

While the visuals for “Wyclef Jean” would have been ideal with Young Thug physically present, what Ryan Staake managed to come up with is a masterpiece in its own right.
