1986

1988

Studio Ghibli released "Grave of the Fireflies" (Hotaru no Haka), directed by Isao Takahata. The film is known for its powerful portrayal of the effects of war on children and is considered one of the most emotionally moving animated films ever made.

1989

Hayao Miyazaki directed "My Neighbor Totoro" (Tonari no Totoro), which became an iconic and beloved film, especially among children. Totoro, the titular character, became the studio's mascot.

1992

"Porco Rosso" was released, further solidifying Miyazaki's reputation for creating imaginative and visually stunning films.

1997

2001

2004

Studio Ghibli's influence extended beyond Japan with the release of "Howl's Moving Castle" (Hauru no Ugoku Shiro), directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

2013

Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement after directing "The Wind Rises" (Kaze Tachinu). This led to discussions about the future of Studio Ghibli.

2014

Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata directed his final film, "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" (Kaguya-hime no Monogatari), which received critical acclaim.

2016

After a brief hiatus, Studio Ghibli continued to produce films. "When Marnie Was There" (Omoide no Marnie) was the last film released before a temporary pause in feature film production.

2020

The full Studio Ghibli catalogue is now available online. While the studio paused feature film production, it announced plans for a Studio Ghibli theme park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, dedicated to the studio's iconic works.

2023

After starting off the year with a LOEWE collab, on April 4, 2023, Koji Hoshino announced that he had stepped down as chairman, and would serve as a representative director before planning to exit Studio Ghibli completely during the company's annual general shareholder's meeting in June, one month prior to the release of director Hayao Miyazaki's final movie The Boy and the Heron on July 14. 

The following month they debuted a fresh new collab with Levis.

Studio Ghibli turned their best movies into fragrances.

The latest Hayao Miyazaki film "The Boy and The Heron" comes out in theaters Dec 9, 2023.
