Football (soccer, if you’re American) magazine “Eight by Eight” explores the art of commentary in an extended Issue 05 feature, beginning with the notes of BBC Radio Newcastle’s Nick Barnes. The notes are a colorful, systematic ordeal, an exercise in organization that us mere mortals can only aspire to. For each match for which he commentates, Barnes sketches a two-page, highly detailed spread with notes in two color-coded divisions, with information on Sunderland’s opponent on the left and real-time updates on the right. It’s really an incredible system, showing how soccer is much more than kicking a ball and scoring points. Be sure to check back for part II featuring NBC Sports’ Arlo White. Purchase Issue 05 here in the meantime.
