Growing up in the small town of Karlstad, Sweden, a bicycle was Jimmy Östholm’s constant travel companion. After working in product design and communication, Östholm looked back to the first bike he built with his father and saw an opportunity to bring things full circle.

That’s how Vélosophy was born. The company’s bicycles feature aluminum frames accented by brightly-colored wheels, handlebars, and saddles. At their core, the cycles are meant to make people happy, which is part of the reason they were inspired by tulips.

The models are available in “Sport” and “Comfort” editions, with the “Sport” editions featuring a slightly more forward-leaning seat and bars, alongside alloy fenders, an anti-rust chain, and a smooth-shifting three-speed integrated hub from Sram. Both options have a pre-mounted carrier system that can hold either a basket or flat carrier for convenient storage options.

Aside from the design, it was important to Östholm to give back and enrich communities. For every Vélosophy bike sold one is donated to a schoolgirl in Ghana. The donations are made through UNICEF to make sure the bikes are received safely. According to Östholm, bicycle transportation has lead to significant increases in attendance and grades by making school more accessible for these girls.

Beautiful in both design and purpose, Vélosophy is a brand to keep in mind for your next two-wheeled purchase. You can check out the bikes in one of three showrooms in Sweden as well as the company web store.
