Creative direction can be ambiguous by nature, often requiring a keen eye for intangible and conceptual details. In the context of a contemporary clothing brand, creative direction can be fundamentally boiled down to deciding what is right or wrong for your brand. Virgil Abloh is one practitioner who has gained acclaim for his work with Kanye West, as well as for DONDA consulting roles and of course with his own fashion label OFF-WHITE.

In this preview of Part 1 of the Virgil Abloh-curated Streetwear: Mastered program, Abloh and A-COLD-WALL*’s Samuel Ross pull from their own experience in touching on why defining and deconstructing a brand is crucial, and how this leads to more efficient communication to the desired audience. Finally Samuel sets a challenge for designers enrolled on the program to refine the mission statement for their brands into a single sentence.

In this part of the program, successful applicants will also have access to materials from Rob Jest, Eric Elms, Samuel Ross, Leah McSweeney and Mike Cherman. Learn more and see the full lineup on the Mastered homepage.

For a further taste of the Streetwear: Mastered program, tune in to our Berlin panel discussion, featuring Jörg Haas of BEINGHUNTED, Alex Flach of Civilist and Russian-born illustrator Mago Dovjenko, chaired by Highsnobiety's own Brock Cardiner.
