Paramount Pictures has revealed the first teaser trailer for its live-action remake of the manga classic, Ghost In The Shell.

The eerie, glitchy trailer show Scarlett Johansson as the lead character, The Major, for the very first time. Rather than taking the traditional, linear approach to trailers usually seen for big Hollywood movies, Paramount has instead served up a series of impressionistic moments, glued together to create a confusing but brilliant tension.

The glossy, heavily-stylized teaser will almost certainly add to the growing anticipation for the movie's release, but they're unlikely to cool the surrounding controversy regarding the casting. Since it was first announced Johansson would be starring in the film, there has been constant concern and outrage over the fact that a white actor is taking the role of a character who is considered to be quintessentially Japanese.

That aside, the first clip gives fans a taste of what director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) has up his sleeve, both in terms of action and aesthetics. And in that regard, the new Ghost In The Shell looks very promising indeed. Check out the trailer above.

In other movie news, Jared Leto has been confirmed to play Andy Warhol in a new biopic.
