Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel has revealed exactly what happened surrounding the hilarious “Best Picture” award gaffe during his opening monologue on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! talk show.
“As I’m sure you’ve at least heard, La La Land was simultaneously somehow the biggest winner and loser last night,” Kimmel said, referring to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly announcing the film as the winner at Sunday’s Academy Awards. Moonlight, as we later found out, was the actual winner.
Kimmel was supposed to end the show from the audience, sat next to Matt Damon. However, that all changed when the mistake was finally realized. “We’re sitting there and we notice some commotion going on,” Kimmel said. “And Matt says, ‘I think I heard the stage manager say they got the winner wrong.’ … So you just kind of figure, well, the host will go onstage and clear this up. And then I remember, oh I’m the host.”
The awards’ accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, has since taken responsibility for handing Beatty and Dunaway the wrong card and apologized to all involved. “It was the weirdest TV finale since ‘Lost,'” Kimmel cracked. Watch Jimmy’s full explanation above.
