It is rare to find a work of beat-driven electronic music that balances both extreme light and dark moods without ever feeling forced. Rarer still to find a track just as deftly balances its tone; the ability to sound relentlessly hard and cloyingly ambient within a span of seconds. "MORTAL," the title track from enigmatic producer RIP Swirl's upcoming EP, somehow accomplishes all the above in just under three minutes. Stream its world premiere below via SoundCloud.
Swirl, a multitalented producer and DJ currently based in Berlin, makes work that takes previously held notions of genre into the blender. In his own words, his music is inspired by the "more solitary ends of hazy R&B and lo-fi dance music." However you label it, it is serving him well -- he has shared stages with artists as numerous and varied as Nosaj Thing, Chet Faker, Rejjie Snow and Highsnobiety favorites like Jacques Greene and Tommy Genesis.
The MORTAL EP is out on June 26. Stay up to date on RIP Swirl's SoundCloud page right here. Cover art shot by Conrad Hübbe.
