When word first broke of a collaborative project between 21 Savage and Metro Boomin, the hype-train left the station full steam ahead. 21 Savage’s inclusion amongst the 2016 XXL Freshmen Class cemented him as an emcee to watch in the coming months, while Metro Boomin is practically a child prodigy in the world of hip-hop producers. But now the much-discussed project has arrived in the form of Savage Mode, a tight, 9-track opus that packs on hell of a punch.
Much has been made of the dark (if not outright violent) lyrical content that has come to characterize 21 Savage’s style. Needless to say, those looking for a good-time, rolling with the homies vibe on this record should stay away. This is not for the faint of heart. Savage’s raps are only accentuated by the thundering, ominous production work from Boomin. Aside from this new dynamic duo, the only featured artist on the record is Boomin’s previous collaborator Future, who hops in on a track titled “X.”
