Editor’s Notes: Havaianas, the ultimate purveyor of the flip flop, has kicked off summer 2020 by introducing a new silhouette that pays tribute to the Japanese Zori. For the silhouette’s debut, Havaianas – fittingly – teamed up with Japanese label mastermind JAPAN on a limited edition drop that features one colorway of the all-new Tradi Zori and one of the Top, Havaianas’ OG flip flop model.
"Havaianas is iconic and the most famous flip flop brand in the world, so to collaborate with a flip flop brand, it has to be Havaianas,” says Masaaki Homma, mastermind JAPAN's founder. “Zori is a traditional form of footwear in Japan, so we are very honored that they chose us to be the first brand to collaborate with the new Zori model. We love Havaianas’ products and working on the new Zori model was the icing on the cake."
The Zori, a three-pronged sandal traditionally made of rice straw and fabric, was the point of inspiration for the first Havaianas flip flop back in 1962, and the new Tradi Zori silhouette gives it a modern spin, replicating its oversized, rectangular shape in cushioned rubber and merging it with a flip flop-shaped footbed and rubber tread.
Keeping to the monochrome color plate mastermind JAPAN is known for, both models feature a black base with brand’s signature skull and crossbones motif printed onto the footbed, in grey on the Tradi Zori and white on the Top. The Top also features metallic pins of Havaianas' logo and mastermind JAPAN's skull and crossbones on the rubber strap.
