Editor’s Notes: Nike’s latest hybrid sneaker combines features from its classic Cortez silhouette with 2018’s Vapor Street Flyknit model to create a brand new lifestyle shoe.

Officially, the Moon Racer is inspired by the Nike Moon Shoe, an early prototype of the iconic Nike Waffle Trainer. This is underlined by the moon graphic sockliner and insoles. The Moon Racer is now available in two colorways, a String/Volt and Black/White iterations.

Nike’s waffle iron outsole-outfitted Moon Shoe debuted in 1972, just three years after the United States sent men to the moon.

The Moon Racer was created because Nike Sportswear design noticed parallels between the origin of the Moon Shoe and Breaking2, the Swoosh’s attempt to break a two-hour marathon barrier with the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%.

“Both the Moon Racer and the VaporFly 4% tell stories around innovation,” said Nathan Schultze, Nike Sportswear footwear designer. “They celebrate Nike’s vision of enhancing human potential through sport.

“We played into the idea of space exploration, and even more specifically, the moon, as the ultimate in human aspiration.”
