What the Internet Is Saying: Not only has Social Status’ special-edition Dunk captivated sneakerheads, the story behind the project has resonated with the audience, who believe Social Status have added real depth and authentic community spirit to the project.

What We’re Saying: Social Status has communicated that the release of the “Chocolate Milk” colorway of its upcoming Nike Dunk “Free Lunch” collab has been delayed. Whereas previously, the release date was penciled in for September 4, it was then pushed back to September 10.

Likewise, the “Strawberry Milk” colorway was going to drop on September 18 but is now dropping on October 15, according to Social Status.

The sneaker, which was specially designed and created for Social Status, is not a High, not a Low, and not a Mid. This sneaker does not exist outside this collaboration, making it all the more special.

The project’s inspiration is one that lies close to Social Status founder James Whitner and his team’s heart: free lunch. Both colorways of the Social Status x Nike Dunk “Free Lunch” are nods to the chocolate and strawberry milk that are a part of the government assistance program that supports underserved and underprivileged children across the United States.

But the project doesn’t just create awareness of the gaps in wealth, resources, and opportunities many children — mainly from minority backgrounds — still face today. Whitner and his team have also remodeled the East Liberty store so that the social and educational spaces sit in front of the retail space, they have opened an art gallery at the same location to break down barriers to entry into the art world for underserved communities, and they have refurbished and will run a community center in Whitner’s old neighborhood.

This project, like so many of The Whitaker Group’s undertakings, is all-encompassing and strives to make a real, lasting change — aided by storytelling through product. To read more about the Social Status x Nike Dunk “Free Lunch” project, head to our exclusive interview with Whitner.

The Social Status x Nike Dunk “Free Lunch” pack is launched first with "Chocolate Milk" (September 10) and will follow up with "Strawberry Milk" (October 15) online and in-store at Social Status.
