Where the runway meets the street

With his debut album breaking records on both sides of the Atlantic and his every move breaking the internet, 2016 is a year that belongs to Zayn Malik. Despite his controversial split from One Direction which left teenage girls everywhere in throes of agony, this year’s solo effort Mind of Mine has been a blockbuster success with a fair amount of critical acclaim to boot. Not one to slow down, Zayn has now just launched a line of merch in support of his album that is surprisingly fashion-forward.

Though, to be fair, we had previously taken notice of Zayn’s sartorial instincts, especially after he appeared front row at Louis Vuitton and Valentino’s most recent shows. But as far as album merch goes, his Mind of Mine pieces are particularly eye-catching. Comprised of 23 pieces of T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts and hoodies, there are a wealth of graphics and personal touches to unpack. Some simply feature his face, while others carry Arabic calligraphy in reference to his Pakistani heritage. Easily the most unique and curious of these pieces is a T-shirt containing an original illustration from Mark Wilkinson, the designer behind the iconic, heavy-metal aesthetic of Iron Maiden. Does this make Zayn more badass? Hard to say, but at least the look is there.
