Tune in and turn up

Aside from Drake taking home an impressive 13 awards and performing from the Bellagio Fountain, this year’s edition of the Billboard Music Awards was full of some seriously heavy musical star power. See below for our breakdown of the evening’s essentials.

Nicki Minaj kicked things off in big way with a medley of some of her most recent hits. Wearing a bejewelled mask and bondage, surrounded by hazmat-inspired set design and styling, she began to rap “No Frauds” with Lil Wayne soon joining her. They also performed their new song with David Guetta “Light Up My Body,” Jason Derulo joined Nicki for “Swalla,” and she wrapped things up solo with “Regret in Your Tears.”

The superstar rapper stunned in an elaborate strappy silver dress, and kicked it will fellow Young Money affiliates – mostly notably Lil Wayne wearing a sweater with her likeness on it.

Miley Cyrus took to the stage to perform her newest single “Malibu” from her forthcoming album, keeping it country in an all-white ensemble and floppy hat.

Canadian icon Céline Dion celebrated the 20th anniversary of Titanic with a performance of the film’s smash-hit theme song, “My Heart Will Go On.”

Lil Uzi Vert shared a blunt with Machine Gun Kelly during her performance and declared that it was “beautiful.” What a co-sign.

Lorde performed “Green Light” from her upcoming full-length Melodrama. Like Drake, she eschewed the stage for a more interesting setting – a neon-lit karaoke room, where she read her lyrics off a screen.

Much of the show was focused on Cher, as she received Billboard’s icon award and performed at an awards show for the first time in 15 years. She made her comeback with her smash hits “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
