Eminem and Dr. Dre are arguably one of the most iconic hip-hop duos of all time, but have you ever wondered how their first studio session went down? In a new clip from the four-part HBO documentary series The Defiant Ones, Dr. Dre and Eminem discuss the early days of their collaboration with exclusive original footage.

As a rapper on the come up, Eminem handed out his cassettes, one of which Dr. Dre got his hands on thanks to Jimmy Iovine. Dre invited Eminem over to his home studio, played him samples, and the rest is history:

“I had a studio in my house at the time, and I went and I put some samples together and did a couple of things in the drum machine and I did a lot of recording … I was like ‘Man, listen. I put this sample together. Tell me if you like it. And I hit the drum machine, and maybe two or three seconds went by and he just went, ‘Hi! My name is… my name is…’ Like, ‘Yo! Stop.’ Shit’s hot. That’s what happened our first day in the first few minutes of us being in the studio.”

“My Name Is” would become Eminem’s breakout single, and the duo would go on to collaborate for years to come. Check out the clip above, and revisit “My Name Is” below.
