Highsnobiety

Humans have long been fascinated by the macabre. Be it in the form of morbid paintings or terrifying poems and plays, the image of the skeleton endures in the human psyche as both an inspiration and a concrete memento mori.

Japan, for instance, has a long and rich art-history of embracing the gruesome, particularly during the Ukiyo-e centuries. It was a theme that was often depicted in the ancient technique of Japanese woodblocking, but has transcended into other canvases - like your favorite garms.

Several pioneering labels from Japan, like Mastermind, WTAPS, and Kapital have favored skeletal graphics across multiple seasons, to such an extent that it has become synonymous with the brands and streetwear of the country. Thanks to such cult-loved outsider labels, the motif still hasn't lost its rebellious undertone.

With Halloween just around the corner and new fall/winter pieces from labels including Our Legacy, Off-White™, and Nike continuing to riff on the skeleton theme, we thought we’d pick out some of the best bare-bone bits around right now.
