Fendi

In terms of bag variety alone, few luxury labels can hold a candle to Fendi. Dare to compare your fancy fave's plain jane leather handbags to Fendi's literal baguette bag, collaborative PORTER pouches, or Baguette hand-shaped from Tiffany & Co. silver.

Even when Fendi tackles an "ordinary" bag, like the men's backpack, it takes things to the next level. Artistic director Silvia Venturini Fendi just can't help it.

The Fendi Chiodo backpack, first seen on Fendi's Fall/Winter 2023 men's runway, epitomizes the house's core tenets in a contemporary package. Here is a seemingly ordinary backpack rendered sleek and futuristic by way of a pared back, minimal façade that's quietly infused with innovative tech uncommon to a daily driver.

See that silver Fendi-monogrammed circle that appears where the ergonomic straps meet the backpack? That's an ingenious metal hinge that allows the Chiodo bag to curve with the wearer's movements.

Chiodo means "nail" in Italian, by the way, which Fendi sees as a subtle reflection of the tools its craftspeople have utilized to craft Fendi's handmade leather goods for generations.

Otherwise, the Chiodo backpack is unmistakably Fendi, from the tonal monogram that covers an all-black iteration to the subtly outsized zipper pulls tastefully branded with the house's name.

A mixed-material masterwork that delivers legacy within a contemporary package? Who else but Fendi.

Fendi's bag innovations aren't limited to a single new style, of course: the maison only just introduced the Cmon bag, its latest leather accessory, in early August 2023.
