Where the runway meets the street

Rihanna, everyone’s favorite pop megastar-slash-DGAF style icon, injected some much-needed adrenaline into the NYFW schedule via her SS18 FENTY PUMA presentation last night. RiRi turned things up to 11 with a motorcross-inspired show that kicked off with a squad of motorcross riders vaulting over some piles of bright pink sand. As you do.

OMFG FENTY #nyfw

Motorcross themes have been bubbling under the surface for a while now, and RiRi catapulted them into the NYFW spotlight with FENTY’s high-octane gear that was splattered with logos, hi-vis colors and sucker-punch styling. In among all the X Games-style moto jackets, biker pants and boots was a bevy of swimwear looks in all sorts of flesh-exposing cuts and eyeball-bursting colorways.

Rihanna’s PUMA project has been a runaway success — the brand has reported profits rocketing by over 90% — and with shows like this, it’s not hard to see why. RiRi creates women’s streetwear that stands well and truly on its own two feet, with a no-compromise aesthetic that’s accompanied by a best-selling sneaker line and spectacular fashion shows.
