Kendall Roy's "Too Much Birthday" Jacket Is a Super Rare Gucci Grail
Walk down the long pink tunnel that greets you into Kendall Roy's 40th birthday party and you are met by a nurse who tells you “you’ve just been born into the world of Kendall Roy.” And that's only the start of this lavish bash. There's a custom-made “compliment tunnel”, ridiculously expensive gifts, a room dedicated to predicting the future, and yet his biggest flex was his jacket.
The latest episode of HBO's Succession, titled "Too Much Birthday", sees the power-hungry son of tech mogul Logan Roy in a super-rare piece of Gucci outerwear. Rocking the piece as part of his party outfit, the jacket in question was released in 2017.
Although it is not always easy to find items from later seasons, the booming resale market means that a bit of internet trawling will usually get you what you need. However, it does not look as though anyone is willing to part with this piece. While it has been listed on Grailed before, the jacket swiftly sold for $3,600, a good deal when you consider that it retailed for $6,900.
Taken from creative director Alessandro Michele's second year at the helm of the luxury fashion house, much of its significance comes from Michele’s signature design elements. The detailed embroidery found in this jacket was typical of Gucci's collections at the time and is still a highly popular element of the 49-year-old's designs. It could be found everywhere in 2017, with A$AP Rocky often wearing full-looks from the brand that incorporated embroidery on the jeans or outerwear. This embroidery combined with a vintage-style varsity jacket, an item the designer has regularly used, makes it a classic piece of Michele design.
The piece itself features a cartoon-style UFO with embellished detailing that covers the back, continuing the extraterrestrial imagery that was presented for AW17. The rest of the quilted satin bomber jacket comes with a green body along with collegiate-style black contrasting arms, velvet trims, and striped burgundy ribbing, overall bringing a luxurious edge to the classic bomber jacket design.
We have no clue how Kendall managed to get his hands on this grail, but check out a range of alternative jacket designs below to get his look.
