Double Tap to Zoom

Layers for fall… groundbreaking, we know. But hear us out: this transitional period can be a tricky one to get right. The sun may be splitting the stones before you head out the door, but come lunchtime, we can almost guarantee you’ll wish you’d grabbed that sweater on the way out.

Knowing this, and anticipating the inevitable temperature whiplash, we’ve teamed up with our pals over at MR PORTER to round up the pieces worth having on hand when summer refuses to fully clock out, but fall is already making itself known.

This is one of the main perks of fall anyway, right? The abundance of fashion, and good fashion at that. Gone is the linen for another year; it’s time to welcome back good ol’ knits and jackets. Ugh, how we’ve missed you.

Shirt Happens

A good shirt, particularly a checked one, is very sexy. There’s no two ways about it. Wearing one on its lonesome in peak summer is one thing, but throwing it on over a white tee with a sweater draped across your waist is a whole other story. Suddenly, you’re not just dressed for the weather, you’re dressed for the occasion. And what’s hotter than that?

Jacket of All Trades

It’s not nearly chilly enough for a puffer yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s not time to start thinking about jackets. This is the sweet spot, really. A good leather jacket will see you through the days when you want to look a little more put together, while a simple rain-repellent cotton one is a safer bet when the forecast is living up to its reputation. Basically, consider these your fall training wheels before we’re all reaching for the big boys again.

"Sweater Weather"

Then, of course, there’s knitwear. After months of T-shirts and linen, a sweater suddenly feels like a novelty. The trick with this in-between weather is not going too heavy, a fine gauge knit over a tee will do the job right now, while a chunkier crewneck can be kept on standby for when things take a turn. And if you’re still not convinced, just drape it over your shoulders and call it a day.
